How to Make Cut Flowers Last Longer

All containers should be thoroughly cleaned with soap and water. Always wash each container before placing flowers in it. Bacterial growths in dirty containers can make cut flowers wilt.
Use a sharp knife or sharp pruning shears to cut the flower stems. Cut the stems on a slant.
All foliage which might be under the water should be removed. Foliage under the water decays qucikly and wilts cut flowers.
Always place the stems of flowers in water at 110 degrees F (bath temperature). Allow the water to cool naturally.

January 25th was European Floral Design's Third Annual Wedding Open House. We often get questions from brides asking which flowers are in season for their wedding dates. So we decided to make seasonal arrangements the theme of this year's Wedding Open House. Our "Four Seasons of Weddings" theme highlighted typical flowers and colors used in winter, summer, spring, and fall events. We wanted brides and their families to see our work and our extensive rentals collection.

People have always come to me with questions and decorating concerns during the holidays, and the main issues have always seemed to be time and money. Our lives are so busy as it is that decorating for the holidays quickly becomes a daunting task for most. After years of running around helping customers decorate their homes, I realized the demand for simple, inexpensive solutions to holiday decor.

We are so proud to announce that Andrea and Ryan's romantic garden wedding was featured in Brides Atlanta Magazine! Beautiful pictures of the Atlanta couple's southern inspired pink and green garden wedding graced the pages of the magazine's Fall/Winter edition.We designed a beautiful bouquet of peonies, cabbage roses, and hydrangeas that matched the color scheme and the old southern feel of the wedding. The flower girls wore wreaths in their hair made from green button mums and they carried baskets of pink rose petals.

In October of 2008, Zack and Elizabeth Zuroweste shared their nuptials at the Cuscowilla Resort on Lake Oconee. With the help of Magdalena's design expertise, the two attorneys from Clearwater, Florida hosted a romantic, autumn wedding that guests would never soon forget. The sunset color scheme accented the picturesque landscape and complemented the warm evening sky dancing off of Lake Oconee that served as the backdrop to this elegant event.

European Floral Design Welcomes Sophie II!

Yesterday, January 5th, we welcomed the newest, (very highly anticipated) addition to the shop, Sophie II, (not to be confused with Sophie I, our King Charles Spaniel shop manager). Sophie II is a bulldog statue, (decorated as a flower girl) who sits at the front of the shop. From her rainboots to her various pearl toe rings she is proving to be every bit as sassy and commanding as Sophie I. We hope that you will all get a chance to stop by and meet our lovely watchdog, but until then we have included some pictures. Enjoy!

Open House 2010 was a Success!

Our annual Wedding Open House this year was a HUGE success! The turnout was great despite the rain and we enjoyed getting to visit with our old friends and clients as well as meeting with new brides, who we are so excited to work with! Beautiful arrangments of all different sizes, styles and colors filled the shop and showcased many different floral trends. If you missed the Open House, no worries, we have plenty of pictures! The wedding of Dana and Brian Rooks took place on October 31, 2009. Does the date sound familiar? If ghosts and goblins were the first thing that came to mind, you'd be right. Celebration at the Georgia Aquarium!

Despite the Valentine's Day madness, about 4 inches of snow and icy road conditions, we slowly and carefully ventured to the Georgia Aquarium last Saturday morning, (the 13th), to set up for an event in the breathtaking Ocean's Ballroom. The huge ballroom features floor to ceiling views of two of the aquarium's massive fish tanks and the event was expected to have around 600 guests.

The rain and cold that had settled in on Athens for several days in early March, subsided just in time for wedding of Jessica Brischler and Adam Buchanan. The two exchanged their vows at the University of Georgia Chapel on Saturday, March 13th, 2010, with the reception to follow at the Classic Center. On Sunday, March 14th Christina Collier and Daniel Cole wed among an intimate gathering of family members at the Taylor-Grady House. The bride looked stunning as she walked down the aisle with a simple, yet elegant and sophisticated bouquet of white roses and hydrangeas. At the reception, more of the couple's extended family and friends joined them in celebrating their union and it reflected the same theme of simple sophistication. The arrangements were accented with red berries and bright greenery for added interest!

University of Georgia Board of Regents 2010

This past weekend, (March, 20th) all of us here at the shop made the trip to Atlanta to set up the floral arrangements we designed for the big Board of Regents event. The expansive Atrium Ballroom at the Atlanta Marriot Marquis was beautifully decorated with dramatic lighting and table settings as well as our colorful and one-of-a-kind floral arrangements. In my opinion, the bold colors and very unique flower selections made this year's decor even more stunning than last year's!

A Colorful Soiree on an Early Spring Day.

On March 7, 2010 Tzipporah and Marc shared their nuptials at a beautiful old mill, just outside of Atlanta. The bride chose a very colorful and exotic palette for her flowers, including green and purple dendrobium orchids, lavendar and orange roses, blue delphinium, and tropical hot pink ginger. The flowers made for an opulent affair, and truly enlivened the space.

St. Simons Adventures!

This past weekend I had the pleasure of getting some much needed r&r in my favorite place: St. Simons! While I was there I met the owner of the FABULOUS Ocean Lodge and was lucky enough to get a tour of the place. To say that it is beautiful wouldn't begin to do it justice. The stunninng decor and breathtaking St. Simons views from the various balconies create an ambiance fit for royalty, (I felt like a queen while eating breakfast there)!

A wedding is a wonderful celebration of a couples love and the beginning of their journey together as a couple. So why not celebrate surrounded by your favorite things? In this month's article of Southern Distinction, Magdalena shows readers how to incorporate a theme into your wedding. The article features a Moroccan themed wedding centered around vivid colors that were emphasized throughout the floral arrangements. The bright oranges, pinks, reds, and deep blues and purples set a wonderful, Moroccan theme and helped make the bride's wedding everything she dreamed of.

Great Decorating Ideas

We love to incorporate different elements into the wedding ceremonies and receptions that we design. A great way to do this is through pew candelabras. If you are having a wedding in a chapel or sanctuary these candelabras are a wonderful way to create a walkway because the candelabras attach to the pews. The floral arrangements are created a sturdy plastic container that fits perfectly into the candelabra. So not only can the arrangements be used in the wedding, but they can also be transported to the reception site and used as centerpieces.

Beautiful August wedding at the Georgia State Botanical Garden's Day Chapel. The bride carried a beautfil bouquet of spider mums, orchids, and hydrageas which gracefully complimented the groom's orchid and berry boutonniere. The couple's ceremony honored both the groom's Jewish background and the bride's Scottish ancestry. An unforgettable event accented with some of the most beautiful blooms of the season!

The July 31^st wedding of Amy Holland and Grady Morris in Hartwell, GA was a beautiful union accented with some of the finest florals to be found in the midst of the late summer heat. The ceremony was held at Hartwell First Methodist Chruch followed by a lovely reception at the Cateechee Golf Club. The bride chose a beautiful variety of blooms in a vivacious color scheme of bright pinks, oranges, and yellows.
